Gijs Ockeloen

Gijs (1957) co-owns design consultancy studio KVD reframing. He was educated at Delft University of Technology (faculty of Industrial Design) and spent a formative semester at Ohio State University, where he studied Semantic Applications in Product Design with prof. Reinhard Butter. Gijs Ockeloen is a design introspector interested in cultural and social implications of technology.
Gijs joined Philips Design in 1987 to gain experience developing medical equipment and industrial electronics. His designs marked a new approach in Philips’ Medical Systems thinking, were widely published and won international awards. In 1991 he founded his own studio dedicated to developing products for professional users: dok industrial design with Maurits de Koning. 

In 2006 his studio merged with KVD Reframing, which he co-owns with his business partner Matthijs van Dijk.

Part time work, commitee's and jurys

Gijs thinks it makes sense to stay in touch with the minds of young designers and therefor likes to play a role in education. From 1993 to 1999 he taught a subject he calls ‘Design Introspection’ at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and consecutively became a member of an advisory committee of the Netherlands Foundation for Fine Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB). Currently he coaches industrial design students at the Technical University Eindhoven in ‘Playful Interaction’. Gijs has a keen interest in the design discourse. During 2010 and 2011 he was a member of Premsela's Peoples Republic, Premsela’s advisory committee on ProAm Culture. These days Gijs is interested in technological histories, new media and digital cultural implications for product design, service design, architecture and public space.
